Capital punishment is the taking of human life due to a crime committed by the accused person. It is a decision made by the law as a form of justice on the wrong committed. The type of execution depends on the religion, special ways of a particular state or community. Execution can be in many respects including hanging, firing squad, beheading or lethal injection. From the early 19 century, these executions were part of the laws in many countries, until human rights activist emerged and started fighting against the act. According to the current statistics, countries which are ranked among the first to practice this practice are China, Iraq, Iran, Japan, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somali, USA, and Yemen (Nagin, 9). Many argue that the judgment is not a necessary form of justice because it portrays the disrespect of human life and the cruelty of justice. It violates the right to live according to their views.
Justice is the way of correcting to an offender so that the offender can fit back into the society as a reformed person. In the case of justice being practiced, the offender is given a chance to change and become a new person who is beneficial to the society (Canes-Wrone, Brandice, Tom, Clark, and Jason, 24). By sentencing one to death, the opportunity for the individual to be better in the society is taken away. There can never be justification for the cruelty of human life. The offender is not only the victim of injustice, but his family and loved ones are victims too. To such a family, taking away of their child is not the right way since life was not given to him by the law or government. It, therefore, shows that the government or law has no right to take away life.
Violation of human rights is seen in the capital punishment. Human rights are the ways that man can live freely in the world. It is an aspect of freedom of the human life. As much as a person has committed an offence, the person still has rights (Canes-Wrone, Brandice, Tom, Clark, and Jason, 30). The offender still having rights is evidenced by the fact that the offender is allowed to have a lawyer in the court of the law and to face trial. Under the human rights, life is one of the major issues. Punishment is allowed as a way of correcting human behavior, but the act of killing to correct an offence does not solve the problem. Many religions have joined hands to protest against the violation of human rights.
Discrimination is also evidenced by this form of justice. Once an offender commits a crime, they should not be seen as outcasts in the community, but they should correct through a correctional centre to help them reform. The act of discrimination can quickly alter the mental functioning of the offender and result to the person committing more crimes or becoming mentally ill (Nagin, 11). The thought of isolation from the society can make the offender harm or hurt anyone around them. An upcoming trend is the judgment of mentally ill patients in the US has been debated. It has shown discrimination to those either born mentally sick or those that fall ill in the process of life. The mentally ill should not face execution, but they should be treated equally like any other normal human.
Punishment using death increases the disrespect of human life and cruelty. It shows the world that is not just in punishment. It destroys the value of life and indicates that a criminal has no right to live. It is therefore not right to practice justice by way of death despite the situation since life is sacred. It is better to give life long sentence as a form of justice than the death judgment. This argument is brought about by the beliefs and religion of people. Different religions are standing firm to protest against the killings.

To make an argument is fundamental to modern Americans: we argue about everything. We argue with our friends and families; we argue with our neighbors and those in the media. In the professional and academic worlds, the ability to make good arguments is of paramount importance. We advance our jobs and we advance knowledge through our arguments. An accountant in a multi-billion dollar corporation will have to make an argument for the millions of dollars out of balance on annual fiscal reports. The small business person will have to make an argument to a loan officer about the financing of the business’ expansion. The teacher will have to make an argument for the beneficial effects of a new pedagogy. In academia the sociologist will have to make an argument for a new concept based on empirical data or the literature scholar an argument for a new interpretation of a John Donne poem.
Disciplines and professions all have their own ways of arguing: they inhabit different ethos positions, establish credibility in different ways, favor certain lines of argument, and provide different kinds of evidence. However, there are some things that are relatively common: credibility, appeal, and evidence. They are also bound by the rhetorical situation: a speaker/writer saying/writing a message to an audience in a given situation/context. Where in our personal lives we can make arguments based on little more than our own opinions with little to no evidence and in some cases little to no logic, in academia and the professions rhetors, to be taken seriously, must adhere to the aforementioned critical factors. Imagine the small business person approaching a loan officer for money to expand her business. When the loan officer asks why she should get the loan, the businesswoman replies with the fact that she has a gut feeling that the expansion will be good for her business. Or imagine the teacher who replies about the benefits of a new pedagogy with the fact that it seems exciting. These are arguments that don’t typically wash. Instead, imagine the businesswoman with market analysis and demographic information and the teacher with research studies. Claims and evidence.

Topic Selection: This is perhaps the most important aspect of writing well: finding something good to write about! You should think about choosing a timely issue that provides for interest in your readers (if you don’t have a specific audience in mind, think of your audience as other students who read Logos). An argument that Twitter is dumb is not an academic, well-put claim; an argument that Twitter makes for superficial knowledge is better, but that’s a big topic that will need a lot of evidence, perhaps more than you have space for; that Twitter is superficial because it more or less only links to the popular press and niche blogs and therefore creates a space that only leads to confirmation biases is better. The order of the day is narrow, narrow, narrow.
Credibility: How do you establish your credibility? In this context you establish it by showing that you have command (good knowledge) of the issue. Using good sources is only one part of this. You must also be able to make logical claims and anticipate other, opposing positions; in effect, show that you know the conversation surrounding the issue. Credibility also has to do with how you express your ideas. You should present your argument using more or less correct grammar/mechanics and good organization of your ideas.
