*Please see textbook page 626: “The Country Notebook—A Guide for Developing a Marketing Plan” for more detailed discussion of each of the parts of this project.
PROJECT COMPONENTS
The Country Project is designed to provide the students with experience in analyzing a country's cultural and economic environment and experience in developing a marketing program for a specific product. The project requires that the student select a country and submit a series of five reports. The first report is determining the country and the product/service to be exported. The second report is a general survey of the country's culture. The third report covers the economy of the country including a thorough analysis of the distribution and marketing systems. The fourth report is a market audit and competitive analysis of a country market for a specific product. The fifth report students develop a preliminary marketing plan for a product under consideration for marketing in the country they have selected.
Students should view the project from the perspective as if they represent a large multinational company planning to expand operations to a new country. The task is to analyze and tentatively propose a marketing program for the company's product in a foreign country. After a complete analysis the student will determine to market the product or not to market the product. Under these circumstances, the value of a decision not to market the product in the country is as important as a decision to market. Normally 20 percent of students elect not to market their products. The only word of caution given to students who might elect not to market the product is to be certain that their market analysis is adequate and that they can justify their decision based on the data collected.
The reports include a heading on each page (i.e. date, student name, name of report), page numbers (bottom middle) single spaced paragraphs and double spaced between paragraphs written in style Times Roman 12” pitch. Citations and References are APA guidelines. The length of the reports are as follows: Part 1 is one page; Parts 2-5 are between three to four papers. Reports have a page limit since most students find enough information to write substantially more than 15 pages. This forces the student to organize, analyze and then present only the most important material from a marketing perspective.
NOTE: The outline is a checklist of what you could include in your report. If you want you may use bullet points. However, you must write in complete sentences. Section headings are encouraged as this helps me easily identify the focus of individual sections of your report. At the conclusion of this outline you are asked to write an executive summary. The length of the report is as follows: Answers to Outline Questions (found in your textbook p. 625 see "The Country Notebook): 3-4 pages not including references; followed by a executive summary of 1 page; conclude with references. While researching your country project you will obtain a large amount of information from a variety of sources. Your job is to condense and only keep what is important as I stop reading after 4 pages!
How does your instructor grade the reports?
Grades will be determined in terms of the report analysis adequacy and coverage. Of major importance is how well information gathered in the cultural and economic reports are applied in developing a marketing program. In addition, the application of marketing concepts through instructor lectures and text assignments as well as concepts learned in other marketing and business courses is considered in grading. See grading rubric.
Guideline for a Market Audit and Competitive Analysis and Marketing Plan – Part 4
Of the guidelines presented, this is the most product or brand specific. Information in the other guidelines is general in nature focusing on product categories, whereas the data in this one is brand specific and are used to determine competitive market conditions and market potential.
Two different components of the planning process are reflected in this guideline. Information in earlier researched parts serves as the basis for an evaluation of the product/brand in a specific market country. Information in this guideline provides an estimate of market potential and an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of competitive marketing effort. The data generated in this step are used to determine the extent of adaptation of the company's marketing mix necessary for successful market entry and to develop the final step, the action plan.
The detailed information needed to complete this guideline will not necessarily be available without conducting a thorough marketing research investigation. Thus, another purpose of this part of the country notebook is to identify the correct questions to ask in a formal market study.
After completing the culture, economics and market audit papers, the emphasis of the project shifts to the second learning objective, that of preparing a marketing feasibility study or marketing plan for a specific product.
In any study of the domestic market, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the situation confronting the firm be developed. The situation analysis usually is defined as consisting of the following topics: general information about the industry, competition and governmental controls along with information about the firm and the market. The information required varies in the amount of detail depending on the time and resources available for the situation analysis.
Marketing managers and researchers involved in the collection of information for situation analyses are well aware of the problems associated with identifying needed information. The availability of needed information is a substantial problem in the domestic market, and the problems intensify when trying to identify needed information for a foreign market. Since the sources of information available to students are primarily secondary, it is typically necessary to modify the requirements of the situation analysis for students trying to identify such information about a foreign market.
The structure of the project is such that the students are asked to prepare an analysis of the feasibility of marketing a product in the country they have selected and determine if it is a profitable opportunity to market the product in a foreign country. Second, the students are asked to specify an organizational form consistent with the countries' laws, but further background information about the firm is kept to a minimum so that the students can focus their attention on the marketing opportunity and problems associated with marketing the product in the country they have selected.

This project will discuss and describe the American company Amazon.com. Amazon.com is a web services provider, a manufacturer of electronic book readers, and an online retailer. The company provides a modern iconic example of electronic commerce (Faherty, 2017). The organization's headquarters are in Seattle, Washington. Amazon.com was incorporated in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, who was a former Wall Street hedge fund executive. The organization commenced by initializing the selling of books online to technically astute customers at the time. However, the organization diversified to other online services over the following years, reaching revenues of up to $610 by the year 1998 (Hall, 2021). Amazon deals with multi-variant products and services. The organization's products include books, houseware, electronics, music, movies, toys, and other products. Amazon.com offers these products either directly to or as the middleman between retailers and the millions of customers Amazon.com has (Nadar, 2018). The company also provides various services, including web services i.e., renting of computing services and data storage to clients (cloud computing). Amazon.com has been successful in offering its online-based services. In 2012, 1% of all internet traffic for North America traveled through Amazon.com data centers. The company also developed the market-leading e-book reader, "Kindle," which has led to a dramatic increase in the promotion of e-book and online publishing in the book industry (Ferreira, 2019).
Amazon has also diversified into developing its private brands. For this Country Project, the focus will be Amazon's private-label diapers (Pankratz, 2018). The organization launched this new diapers brand under the Mama Bear brand (known to sell other baby items like diaper pail refills and baby food). These new diapers now account for 38 percent of the brand’s sales (Shehan, 2018). The new Mama diaper brand owned by Amazon is manufactured through Kimberly Clark in the USA. The Mama-bear brand is available in two pattern options, i.e., a bear's print and a white option.Newborn diapers sell for $25.49, size 1 diapers $38.49, and size 2 diapers $39.69. These diapers are sold as 4-packs, which vary according to diaper size.Amazon is focused on producing diapers for newborns through to size 6 diapers for children.Amazon’s Mama bear diaper brand is manufactured with the following qualities.

Marketing Program Analyses
Introduction
There are many considerations when it comes to developing a marketing program for a particular product. These considerations include the firstly making a decision about which product is to be marketed and the location, the culture of the people in the region you plan on marketing your product, the market system of the region, prepare the market audit and the competitive analysis about the product you want to market, and finally prepare a preliminary marketing plan for the product that is considered. A marketing program helps in reducing the chances of a business failure as important analyses are carried out before a decision to set up the business is made. It is also important to familiarize yourself with the area in which a business is supposed to be set. Thus, familiarization with the area a business is to be set is another importance of a market program.
Determination of the product to be chosen depends on various factors that affect the location. These factors may be the availability of the market, skilled manpower, favorable government policies, and many more. An individual is supposed to choose a product that has high demand and a region that is favorable for business operations. In terms of culture , one is supposed to be on the lookout for the religion that dominates the area, the language used in the area, housing, Education, and many more.
One is then supposed to explore the market systems in the area, how the retailer, wholesalers, manufacturers, and consumers correlate with each other. Finally, after one analysis the market audit and the competition the product one has chosen will face, an individual is supposed to prepare a preliminary marketing plan that proposes the objectives one has in the market, the benefits of the product, and the benefits gained as a result of the Trade resulting from this product.
Reasons For Exporting Crude Oil to Switzerland
Exporting crude oil to Switzerland is one of the most competitive business centers worldwide. There are numerous good reasons to locate a business in Switzerland, such as innovation and technology, a liberal economic system, political stability, close links with foreign markets, excellent education and healthcare systems, an outstanding infrastructure, a high standard of living, and a competitive tax system. This success is due, in part, to the presence of renowned research institutes and the ability to effectively turn research results into marketable products.
Political Stability
Switzerland has a very stable federal-state system, a stable economy, and political stability. This proves that there is a high level of security for investments in Switzerland. This makes Switzerland a suitable choice (Switzerland Global Enterprise, 2019).
Free Trade Agreements
Switzerland not being a member of the European Union (EU) but its bilateral trade agreements are in agreement with every Country in Europe ensures the free movement of goods and people. According to Switzerland Global Enterprise (2019), Switzerland has 41 more free trade agreements than the EU.
Easy labor laws
According to Switzerland Global Enterprise (2019). “Switzerland’s labor market is characterized by liberal legislation, light-touch regulation, and exceptional social stability” Labor disputes are resolved by the social partners leading to the number of strikes being low.
In short, Switzerland is a suitable country due to its favorable situations such as available manpower that are skilled and innovative, improved technology, and many others.
The Culture of Switzerland
This report discusses the culture of the Swiss people. The culture of a particular country always dictates the way its markets are structured. For example, religion always affects the market, such that the products that are more available in the market tend to be consumed by the religion, which is the majority in the area.
Switzerland's Historical, Demographical Geographical Setting
Switzerland is 42,300 square kilometers in the center of Europe. This Country is surrounded by Italy, Germany, Austria, and France, and it owns about 60% of the Apls (Weibler & Wunderer, 2006). Being born in Switzerland does not make one a citizen. The four linguistic areas in Switzerland, for example, the German led in 1990 by the highest number of people 63.3%, followed by French 19.2% then Italy 7.6%, and finally, 0.6% Rhaeto Romanic (Weibler &Wunderer, 2006). An average house consisted of 2.5 persons, and the Country's average age was 39 years old. Most of the population, about 47%, belonged to the Romanic Catholic Church.
Weibler and Wunderer (2006) suggested that this Country was inhabited by different Celtic tribes in the old stone age. The southern part of the Country was inhabited by the Lambardian tribes, while the Burgundians and the Langoboards adopted Christianity and the Roman language. In 1978 the Country was occupied by Napoleon, and then it entered into a state of crisis that acted as the starting point for the foundation of federal state until 1848. The constitution changed and implemented new rights such as the right of the majorities.
Political System
Weibler and Wunderer (2006) explained that the Country had been a federal state since 1848. and that the basic political values of Switzerland of the present day were based on security, democracy, the welfare state, and the rule of law. Today Switzerland is one of the last countries that are democratic. According to political scientists, Switzerland is one of the countries worldwide that has the most extended, differentiated, and most traditional structures of direct democracy. The people of Switzerland can manipulate political decisions in three ways. These ways are through elections, through the referendum, and through the initiative. This political system ensures elements such as peace and economic stability in the Country, therefore ensuring the mutual business coexistence between Switzerland and us.
Language
The languages of Switzerland include German, German, Italian, and Romansh. Both languages have equal statuses at the national level. The highest native speakers in Switzerland are German while the least native speakers are the Romansh. Apart from these four languages, there are other small languages such as Albania, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Greek, Czech, Thai, Romanian, Chinese, Hungarian Kurdish, and many others. Analyzing the languages will enable us to ensure that the individuals employed to do negotiation know these languages for the purpose of effective communication.
Education System
Compulsory schooling in Switzerland is between 9 and 11 years long. Kindergarten is the first cycle of Primary Education where they are taught different other languages and the Swiss culture though this cycle is not compulsory. Then there are two years of primary Education followed by the lower secondary Education that lasts 3-4 years and upper secondary that lasts for about 3-6 years. There is the continuation of the upper secondary level through tertiary Education and, finally, the universities. The presence of a great education system ensures that the citizens that we employ will be able to expand our markets and solve problems that might face our product. It provides an assurance and an element of trust that the investments and profits will be managed well.
Clothing
The traditional dressing in Switzerland was based on the gender and occupation of the person. The traditional female outfit is very pretty and has traditional accessories. The male ones are simple and ordinary. However, nowadays, the Swiss dress according to different occasions. The traditional clothes are only worn during festivals though smocks are very common in Switzerland. Crude oil produces petroleum which can be used for making synthetic fabrics such as polyesters, acrylic, acetate, spandex, and nylon that can be used to design clothes, especially modern clothes. This forms a ready market for crude oil.
In summary, the different cultures of the Country must be put into consideration. Aspects such as religion, population, and gender distribution affect the market of the product. The Education system may be important, especially when determining the kind of person to hire from Switzerland. Finally, knowing the language of the Country is important because we will be able to deal with the problems that might arise from the language barrier. The political stability of the region will ensure a continued healthy trade-based relationship between us and Switzerland. Finally, Switzerland being a very fashionable country, there is demand for crude oil which is a raw material for manufacturing synthetic fibers such as polymers that really play a huge role in ensuring continual production of clothes.
The Distribution of Market Systems Analysis of Switzerland
A market system is a combination of buyers, sellers, and other elements that come together to do business with a particular product or service. Therefore, the need to analyze the market system is important in predicting the economic stability of a country, i.e., In our case Switzerland. There are many participants in the market system. Producers, consumers, and sellers are the main participants who drive the economic activity of a country.
Distribution channels
Capital goods manufacturers may decide to export their goods directly when contracts with a limited number of customers represent a huge market share (Export.gov, 2019). However, most exporters with products that need the consumer to be trained for use and after-sales service employ the services of a qualified Swiss agent with marketing knowledge. Large orders, however, may also be placed directly with foreign producers. Some of the largest international trading and shipping firms are based in Switzerland, and they operate networks of bonded warehouses and other facilities offering services for international Trade (Export.gov, 2019).
Consumer Goods
The suppliers of consumer goods usually deal with someone who imports goods or wholesalers. These suppliers engage the services of a representative or sell to large retailers, especially if dealing with mass-produced goods. A representative or agent who usually specialized in one or more product groups is often responsible for distribution in all of Switzerland.
Import and Wholesale Trade
Import and Wholesale Trade: many Swiss wholesalers are also importers who generally expect exclusive regional or national rights for the imported product. According to Export.gov (2019), Quality control, warehousing, financing, and transportation services are usually provided by the wholesalers, who usually maintain the stocks of particular products. In Switzerland, there have also been associations of wholesalers who have common interests and facilitate more effective competition with various forms of distribution. For example, the Swiss Trade Association (Export.gov, 2019).
Retail Trade
Retailers entail department stores, consumer cooperatives, chain stores, and supermarkets who usually deal in a wide variety of products and avail them to the consumers. According to Export.gov (2019). these retailers have a competitive advantage compared to the independent retailers due to Vertical structure and centralized buying. This has to be the reason why the number of independent retailers is decreasing, which in turn contributes to the growth of a number of supermarkets and consumer cooperatives. Independent retailers have decided to set up organizations that will provide them with the ability to wholesale purchase various import products and other services that will enable them to compete with the large and vertically integrated retail establishments Export.gov, (2019). Most of the leading retailers are legally structured as cooperatives.
The Swiss government has ensured that there is no oppression of the other group by both suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers. Some of the retailers have even formed associations to ensure they maintain healthy competition with large established retail shops. The wholesalers even provide services such as ensuring the good quality of the product is maintained, transportation, and many more. This clearly indicates that Switzerland is a very competitive nation due to the availability of the market. Importing our product to this Country would really boost our economy.
The Market Audit and Competitive Analyses
Market audit refers to the review of the strategies and set of plans one had for the business, and this is done in order to identify if one made the right decision and if it's working out. The business environment must be thoroughly analyzed, both internal and external factors. Competitive analyses, on the other hand, involve analyzing the market of the product of choice in order to identify other competitors, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
Market Audit
The audit below has focused on analyzing macro-environment factors that might influence the decision of crude oil exportation to Switzerland.
Political and Legal Environment
The Swiss federal state comprises of 26 autonomous that are large and self-governing (UK Trade and Investment, 2019). Swiss politics is associated with consensus and stability. The voters are the ones who have a large say in the political and administrative life of this Country, through the aid of referendum and elections (UK Trade and Investment, 2019).
Switzerland is not a member of the EU, although it participates in some of the EU's activities. Series of bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU was made it covered, for example, land and air transport and free movement of persons. The decision became effective from 1 June 2002 (UK Trade and Investment, 2019). Another decision was made in October 2004 that included the measures to combat tax evasion in the EU. Additionally, Switzerland recently signed tax agreements with Germany and the UK.
Economic Overview
Switzerland has so many economic advantages, including political stability, liquefied financial markets, low taxes, a well-developed infrastructure, and other stable macroeconomic environmental factors. According to the UK Trade and Investment (2019), the World Bank suggested that Switzerland is one of the world's richest countries, with a Gross Domestic Product of US$ 53,367 per head in the year 2012. It also topped the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report between 2012 and 2013; Switzerland finished ahead of Sweden, Finland, Japan, and even the US (UK Trade and Investment, 2019). According to the UK Trade and Investment (2019), Nestlé, Novartis, and Roche – feature in a list of top 40 global companies. Finally, in 2012, Mercer Human Resource Consulting ranked Zurich city as second in the world with high living standards.
Tax
The authority that is responsible for taxation in Switzerland is The Swiss Federal Customs Administration. The normal rate for Value added tax (VAT) that is levied on imported goods is 8%. (UK Trade and Investment, 2019). This same rate also applies to domestic purchases. A few basic necessities such as foodstuffs have a reduced rate of 2.5%. For this reason, the destination country principle applies. Goods to be exported are exempt from local tax in their Country of origin. As for imports, Switzerland is subject to the tax of the destination country instead.
Strengths of the market
In accordance with the UK Trade and Investment (2019), there are many advantages of having a market in Switzerland. These reasons are, for example, the centralized location of Switzerland in Europe help to widen the market of Switzerland which in turn increases the demand for our product, Well-developed business infrastructure in the Country will ensure that problem arising from, for example, poor roads such as delays do not occur during Trade, Business-friendly legal and regulatory environment helps to create a conducive environment for business. They also have a well-educated, reliable, and flexible workforce, Switzerland's macroeconomic environment is stable compared with European neighbors • Very high per capita IT spending; therefore the Country has enhanced technology (UK Trade and Investment, 2019).
In summary, Switzerland is the best place for setting due to the advantages associated with the Country. This Country has a very reliable infrastructure, political stability, a strong economic background, and many others. Though there is competition, there is still a high demand for crude oil by this Country, thus the best location. Switzerland also levies a small amount of percentage on the imported goods compared to other countries. This is even a more reliable reason why we should export our goods to Switzerland.
Preliminary Market Plan for Crude Oil Exportation
A preliminary marketing plan is prepared for the proposes of stating the objectives one has in the market, the benefits of the product, and the benefits gained as a result of the Trade resulting from this product (Balle, 2016).
Objectives Of Exportation
There are many objectives or the reasons why our Country has decided to export crude oil to Switzerland. Firstly, we want to expand our external market, therefore, a need to research the advantages of collaborating with Switzerland. This also enables us to intensify the amount of revenue we receive from exports. Switzerland will also be able to get revenue from the tax that they lay on our imported goods. Secondly, there is a need to formulate good international relationships between us and Switzerland. This will both the countries to enjoy benefits that come as a result of a good relationship with each other. These benefits may be the exchange of valuable ideas, creation of jobs, financial assistance, and many more
According to Balle (2016), another reason why we have decided to export crude oil to get rid of the surplus crude oil that we have and the revenue from this Trade be invested in other programs that are also vital to the Country. These programs may be Education, health, food, and many others. The main reason for this Trade is to stimulate the economic development of both countries. The good outcomes that come from a well-established economy are that it attracts investments from both the locals and investors from other countries. It also leads to the stability of monetary Value of a particular country. Investors will be willing to invest in the various countries because they are sure that the economy is stable and there are higher chances of them getting profits. This, in turn, has so many advantages, such as the creation of employment opportunities, source of government revenue, making use of local raw materials during production, and many others.
Benefits Of Exporting Crude Oil
Both countries will be able to rip off benefits that are brought about by this Trade. Some of them include the Creation of job opportunities, increased Profits, Diversified government expenditure on valuable activities, increased investments, increased government revenue, source of foreign exchange.
, Job opportunities are created both in terms of the middlemen and transporters of the products. This, in turn reduces a country's dependency level as there is an increase in the number of the working class, By the citizens having a source of income, there in increased savings and loans, which may be used for investments or other purposes.
Exporting huge tonnes of crude oil to Switzerland acts as an increase to the government revenue, which in turn enables the government to diversify its expenditure to other fields such as housing, health, infrastructure development, and many more. Similarly, the exportation of this crude oil is a source of foreign exchange between two countries.
Exportation of this product is not only beneficial to one Country. Both countries are able to enjoy the benefits that come with an improvement of the economy. The objectives of this exportation are purely to boost the living standards of individuals in both countries, to improve the government's revenue, help us get rid of the surplus crude oil in an advantageous manner, and more importantly, to boost the economy of each Country. This Trade will also advertise our product to other countries who might be interested in purchasing our products since we will be on the world map as one of the major exporters of crude oil.
Summary
When determining the type and the location, the product will thrive when the business is set. One has to consider the population in order to evaluate the market, The languages and cultures of those occupying the area, the history of the performance of this product in that region over time, The cost of ensuring the product reach the destination, and the production cost, and many more.
Switzerland is the best choice for carrying crude oil exportation for various reasons. Switzerland has a long history of importing crude oil from other countries such as the USA. This means that they have well-laid out policies relating to the importation of crude oil. Similarly, they already know the prices of our products. This provides assurance that there are minor chances of the Trade between us experiencing problems since they have a wider experience on importation of crude oil is done systematically.
Switzerland has perfect environmental factors that will ensure the smooth running of Trade during the importation of the product. Their government levies law tax on the imported goods compared to their neighbors. This helps in reducing our cost of production, which is even a more reliable reason why we should trade with Switzerland. They have improved technology and infrastructure, which are just boosters to the efficiency of Trade between us. On the issue of labor, Switzerland has not only skilled manpower but also manpower that is innovative and inventive due to the availability of advanced technology.
The main reason for trading with Switzerland is the high demand for crude oil even though they still import more. Switzerland has even constructed a few oil refinery stations that help them in reducing the cost of importing refined crude oil products. This, on the other hand, reduces our cost of refining the crude oil before importing, thus making it cheaper to trade with Switzerland. Studies show that the consumption of petroleum products in Switzerland is a combination of both domestic production and imported ones.
